Excerpt
The girl would not stop shaking. She sat in the plastic chair with her knees drawn up, sneakers on the seat, arms wrapped around her shins. Her name was Dani. Fourteen years old. She had been coming to the Northside Youth Center for seven months, long enough for Rowan to know that she chewed her thumbnail when she was thinking and braided her hair when she was happy and pulled at the hem of her shirt when something was wrong. Today she was pulling at her hem so hard the stitching had started to give.
