The hammer rang against the anvil three times before the steel gave in. Kael Astren wiped the soot from his forehead with the back of his wrist and held the iron rod up to the light streaming through the forge's single window. The metal glowed orange at the tip, fading to dull gray along the shaft where the heat had not fully penetrated. Not good enough. The color needed to be even, a consistent cherry-red from end to end, before he could begin shaping. He set it back on the coals and worked the bellows with his left hand while reaching for the tongs with his right.
