Excerpt

She has not set an alarm. The alarm is the street: the tinny horn of a jeepney driver who likes to announce his displeasure with the intersection below, the drag of a metal gate being unlocked at the sari-sari across the road, a dog that has been debating something philosophical with another dog for what sounds like the past twenty minutes. She lives in Sampaloc because it is cheap and close to the university she just finished attending and because her college roommate Josie had a cousin with a vacancy on the third floor of a narrow building that smells permanently of mothballs and something faintly sweet she has decided not to investigate.
