The noise was three flutters to a second, soft as a moth in a jar, and it was coming from somewhere inside eleven tons of machinery that the Human Continuity Directorate had certified as sound. Aldex Oled knelt in the drive space of the courier and pressed the flat of the sounding rod against the aft coil housing. He closed his eyes. Around him the CDV Wayward ticked and settled in her berth cradle, the way any ship did when her systems were cycled down to maintenance draw, and beneath all of that ordinary settling the flutter went on. Three to a second. Not the damper packs.
