Excerpt
By nine that August morning Tito Mendez had the movement spread across a bath towel on the repair bench under the apple tree: mainspring barrel to one side, escapement to the other, the little forest of brass posts standing in their holes like a town he knew street by street. The clock belonged to Mrs. Gong next door. It had kept time in her kitchen for forty-five years, through two stove fires and one flood and the year her sons both left, which she mentioned every time she brought it over for service, so that by now the clock and its history arrived together, like an old married couple.
