Excerpt

The system may be mechanical (the diesel engine's fuel consumption, the steam boiler's pressure), biological (the genome's stability, the graft's rejection), computational (the bandwidth limit, the firewall's intrusion counter), or physical (radiation exposure, atomic charge). But the structure is always the same: the character has access to a powerful capability, that capability has a resource that depletes, and managing the relationship between the capability and the resource is the setting's primary tactical dimension.
